Houston Astros beat Kansas City Royals 3-1 at Minute Maid Park – MLB News
Houston Astros beat the Kansas City Royals 3-1 on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at the Minute Maid Park to take the home series convincingly. The win improves the Astros win-loss record to 14-33 in 2013 season.
Jordan Lyles, the 22-year-old starting pitcher for the Astros, was the star of the show, as he only gave a single run with six hits in six innings and recorded his second win of the season.
Catcher Jason Castro said that it did not matter to Jordan who was on base and all he concentrates on is to get the pitches in the right area. Jason believes that it is his strength.
“It doesn’t really matter who’s on base, what the situation is – he’s just focused on the pitch. When he can do that, that’s when he’s really good,” said Castro,
Manager, Bo Porter, is certainly amongst Jordan’s fans and feels that he has the right goods to succeed. He was also pleased that Lyles made it easier for the bullpen by not giving away too many runs. Astros’
opening pitchers have struggled in general to go deep into the game.
“He definitely has the stuff. … When I sent him back out there for the sixth, I told him, ‘Ain’t nobody coming to get you.’ … He did a great job of getting us through the inning and turning it over to the bullpen,”
Porter said.
The Astros went ahead in the game with the help of a J.D. Martinez two-run home-run in the bottom of the first innings. George Kottaras scored an RBI double in the top of the third to cut the lead into half.
The game remained sedate for the most part afterwards and the only change in the score line took place in the bottom of the eighth innings courtesy of a Jason Castro’s RBI double.
Closer Jose Veras made the save after a 13 pitches 1-2-3 innings in the ninth. Royals’ James Shields got the loss against his name.
The win allows the Houston ballclub and the fans something to celebrate. Though it is still relatively early days in the season, some more similar good performances can allow them decent returns and take them
out from the bottom of Major League.
