Houston Astros beat Los Angeles Angels 7-6 at Minute Maid Park - MLB Update
Houston Astros had a good day at the office as they overcame the Los Angeles Angels by a margin of 7-6 on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at the home turf. This was their ninth win of the season and they currently have a 9-24 win-loss record.
The game started off with in a quick pace with the Angels scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Mark Trumbo scored a three-run home-run to get his team ahead. The deficit was reduced by Jose Altuve who homered at the bottom of the innings.
The Astros, however, really spit fire in the third when they added five runs to their tally. The scoring started with Jimmy Paredes RBI double which was followed by Jose Altuve’s RBI single. Chris Carter then went long for a three-run homer and placed his
team in a commanding position.
Angels kept on chipping away at the lead but a run in the seventh for the Astros put it out of the reach of the Los Angeles ballclub who lost by a single run.
Bo Porter, the Astros’ manager was happy with the outcome. He thought that certain changes in the hitting lineup did make a difference and contributed to the victory.
"You look at moves we made and putting speed at the top of the lineup, it was evident today how it changed a ballgame," Porter said.
He also said that there was intensity in the ballclub that could be felt. He sees the team being as hungry as they were in Spring Training. Porter thought it was unbelievable.
"You can feel it in the dugout, you can feel it in the clubhouse...the intensity," he said. "Guys said, 'No more, let's go. Let's start over and go out with the same hunger we had in Spring Training.' That's what it was all about, the intensity they had
to today. It was unbelievable."
Jordan Lyles made his second start this season and was able to record his first win of the season. He went 3-0 down in the first but was able to work through later and did not give it away. Jose Versa recorded the save, his third one for the season.
Jordan himself felt that he pitched better than he did before and was happy not to lose his calm under pressure.
"I threw the ball a little bit better tonight than I did last outing, just from the fact of being down, 3-0, and putting up some zeros against a pretty good offense to give our team chance to win," Lyles said.
It was a good result for the Astros who have so far had a tough time. They will need to continue with the same intensity and application all through the season to improve upon their performances from the last two years.
