Houston Astros beat Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 after Jarred Cosart’s brilliance on debut – MLB news
Houston Astros beat the red hot Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 after a tremendous Major League debut by Jarred Cosart who surrendered not even a single run and just two hits in over eight innings at the Tropicana Field.
Astros manager Bo Porter was delighted by how the game unfolded and said that he believes that it is indeed pitching where games are won and lost.
“I'm a firm believer that it starts and ends on the mound,” Porter said.
Bo was all praise for the 23-year-old who took the mound for the first time in a Major League game and impressed one and all by his excellent pitching skills. He was pleased that Jarred not only controlled his pitching but his emotions quite well at the
same time.
“What I really liked was the level of composure which he displayed. I just thought he did a great job of controlling his emotions and really honing in to exactly how he wanted to pitch these guys,” the manager said.
Jarred himself was pleased that he was able to get the basics right and was able to establish his control over his pitches early in the game which is always crucial.
“The name of the game is getting balls down, changing speeds -- and I was able to do to that in the first and establish it early,” Cosart said.
It was not without nerves for the young pitcher though who described his heart beating a million times per hour. He said that he had trouble sleeping the night before the game.
“My heart was going a million miles an hour,” Cosart said.
The scoring for the Astros was done in the top of the first innings with Carlos Corporan getting a two-run RBI single. Luke Scott drove on the only run for the Rays in the ninth innings with a single down the centre field. Jose Veras was able to hold the
Rays to record his 18th save for the season.
The anticipation was that after the game, Jarred would return to the Oklahoma City RedHawks. However, after such a stellar performance, the Astros’ management may be forced to put those plans on hold for the moment. It is a bit of a dilemma but one that
is good for the team.
