Houston Astros brace for Spring Training – MLB News
The strength and conditioning coach of the Houston Astros, Gene Coleman, stated on Friday, January 13, that the club is trying to add strength and developing power before the initiation of Spring Training, scheduled for February.
Having his strength training philosophy, Coleman has been with the Astros for over three decades now, an affiliation which had begun back in 1978. That he constitutes a powerful influence on the team and his mentorship is greatly valued as can be gauged
by the fact that he has this strong and unbreakable bond with the team.
Every year, almost all the players have long workouts with the doctor in January, readying themselves for Spring Training. This facility has been perfectly utilised by the players themselves as well.
Among others who have always made use of it are Bud Norris, Brett Wallace, Chris Johnson, Brian Bogusevic, Fernando Rodriguez, Angel Sanchez, Wandy Rodriguez and Humberto Quintero.
Coleman shed light on the plans when asked about the training he said,
"We had workouts starting the last week in October up until about a week before Christmas," Coleman said. "We had nine weeks of workouts there, and we developed a base to start with, and we started developing strength the second time through. And now we're
trying to maximize strength and develop some power and get them ready for Spring Training."
Coleman himself is quite optimistic about the future. He thinks there have recently been some players who are very athletic. “Some of these younger kids we've brought in are very athletic,” said Coleman.
While waiting for February, the training has been rigorous. Coleman expressed his excitement as well.
Houston Astros could not make their way into the playoffs last year as the St. Louis Cardinals won the Wild Card after an incredibly strong encounter that the both teams had. Nonetheless, with changes that have recently taken place, giving a new look to
the Houston, the team will be hoping that they can perform well this time round.
Coleman is also pleased with the training that is carried out in January, thereby instilling more strength and energy in the players to face their rivals once the season kicks off.
