Houston Astros decide not to change team name – MLB News
The Houston Astros’ new owner Jim Crane on Monday, January 30, ruled out the possibility of changing the club’s name after speculations that it was under consideration. Coinciding with the 50th birthday of the club, 2012 was thought to be the
year of immense changes.
Changes have certainly come in a number of ways. While the club shall be part of the American League next year, they will don a new uniform. All the same, last week, the announcement that the price of tickets was lowered and the fans were allowed to bring
food to the ballpark was also made.
However, any prospect of changing the club’s name was ruled out. This was clearly stated in the email that the new owner sent to ticket holders.
"You asked for change, and we addressed our fan-friendly initiatives last week, and we hope you liked them," Crane told fans in a videotaped interview. "We will continue to listen and look for additional ways to improve on and off the field.”
With additional ways of bringing the improvement was appreciable. However, what generated criticism and fierce debate was the hint that the new owner had given last week that the new management may also change the name of the club.
However, after the meeting that he had with avid fans of the club in recent weeks, especially after last week’s announcement, the Houston Astros will continue to be known as the Astros as they always have throughout their fifty years in baseball.
“One thing we're not going to change is the name. We received strong feedback and consensus among season-ticket holders and many fans, and we will not be changing [our name]. Astros are here to stay. We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing
you at the ballpark soon."
Although the Houston Astros did not have a good record in the previous season to be proud of, the fans nonetheless have emotional attachment to the club. It is this reason that the likelihood of changing the Astros’ name stands beyond the bounds of possibility
