Houston Astros defeat Colorado Rockies 3-2 in 12th innings at Minute Maid Park – MLB news
Houston Astros defeated the Colorado Rockies 3-2 in a nail biting thriller on Monday, May 27, 2013, as they got home in the 12th innings at the Minute Maid Park. The win improves the overall record for the Astros this year to 15-36.
Astros Manager Bo Porter was extremely pleased by the outcome and felt that such wins can add a lot of energy to the players and motivate them to move forward with the momentum.
“I think these kinds of wins are definitely something that can catapult you forward from an energy standpoint,” Porter said. “Fighting the way we fought as a team and to come out on top, that momentum can carry over.”
The game was full of drama as it was tied at two runs apiece at the end of the regulation nine innings. It went deep into extra innings and could only be decided by a ground rule RBI double hit by Brandon Barnes. The fact that the hit came with two out made
it even more special.
Bo Porter was full of praise for the 27-year-old centre fielder. He said that he was talking to the bench coach that it was about time that the Houston ballclub won one of these close games. Barnes did just that.
“Brandon did a tremendous job,” Porter said. “We were sitting there, [bench coach] Eduardo [Perez] and I, and we were saying, 'Isn't it about time we win one of these?'”
Brandon himself knew that he had got the hit well enough but was not sure whether or not the ball will remain fair.
“I knew when I got it, I hit it well enough to get it down the line and I knew it was slicing a little bit,” Barnes said. “It was a matter of staying fair.”
This arrested a three game slide for the Astros. It was also their first walk off win since August 11 last year.
It was a good show all around. Bud Norris, the starting pitcher for the Houston ballclub, did not get a decision after throwing down seven innings, just giving away two runs on eight hits. He was able to get crucial outs when the going was tough and did
not let the Rockies get away. Bud has maintained a 2.03 ERA at home in 2013 which is pretty impressive.
The win was recorded by reliever Paul Clemens who now stands at a 2-2 even win-loss record in 2013 season.
The Astros are still under the .300 mark and need to get a winning streak going in order to move forward. The win should help their morale and the fans will be hoping that the team will show similar fight in games to come and win more consistently then they
have thus far.
