Houston Astros go down 7-1 to Seattle Mariners despite solid show by bullpen - MLB Update
The Houston Astros are falling behind once again and the situation is looking familiar to one that the ballclub faced in the last two seasons. The team had another bad loss, this time to Seattle Mariners with a margin of 7-1 on Monday, April 22, 2013 and
now is sitting on a 5-14 win-loss record in the 2013 regular season.
Brad Peacock was the opening pitcher for the Astros who surrendered nine hits and seven runs in the first six innings before he was retired. The bullpen did not give away any more runs but it did not matter as the Astros’ offence could only produce a single
run in the whole game in the bottom of the seventh.
Brad himself knows that he was off colour at the Minute Maid Park and needs to do better. He now stands at a 1-2 losing record this season.
"I didn't have it tonight," Peacock said. "I didn't have my stuff and was getting behind in counts, and I have no excuses. Just gotta keep working."
Bo Porter, the coach for the Houston ballclub once again was left to discuss what went wrong with the team. The issue was quite clear. Opening pitcher fell behind the count more often than he would have liked and then was unable to make a comeback.
"Too many deep counts," Porter said. "That's something Brad is going to have to work on. When you find yourself in deep counts, your pitch count is going to spike real high. And when you have a lot of deep counts, hitters are hitting in good hitter's counts.”
Meanwhile Felix Hernandez, the opening pitcher for the Mariners had a pretty decent day and picked up his second win for the season.
Pitching and lack of hitting was not the only concern for the Astros. They had two errors which are two too many for a team that is not firing whatsoever at this point in time.
Designated hitter for the Astros’ Carlos Pena believes that the team has the abilities but needs to be able to execute those plans. There is talent which should translate into victories he believes.
"We know we're talented, but we want to execute on a daily basis and hopefully by executing, it will translate into some wins sooner or later," Pena said.
This is certainly not a time when the Astros should think of pressing the panic button. However, they have so far been unable to improve upon their performance from the previous two seasons.
Manager Bo Porter will have to get his boys charged up and performing if he intends to post a better record and make a much needed and anticipated turnaround from the gallows of Major League Baseball.
