Houston Astros lose to New York Yankees 4-5 in series finale at Yankee Stadium – MLB Update
A tough road trip for the Houston Astros came to an end with a somewhat disappointing 1-8 win-loss record but certainly the team got some important lessons. They lost the third and final match of the series against the New York Yankees on Wednesday, May
1, 2013, by a slim 4-5 margin at Yankee Stadium.
The Astros did show a lot of fight on the tour though and it may actually help them in moving forward into a positive direction. Currently they have an 8-20 win-loss record which has placed them at the bottom of the American League West.
Astros’ Manager Bo Porter was not very disappointed by the result and he took heart from the fight that was shown by his team in the ballgame. He believed that if they continue to play in this manner they should be able to win games.
"If we continue to play the way we played tonight, we will win a lot of ballgames," Porter said. "That's a good ballclub over there and they won the game, but at the same time, we played the game the way it's supposed to be played and put ourselves in position
to have the opportunity to win, as well."
Pitching remained an issue for the Astros as starting pitcher Erik Bedard was yet again unable to throw four innings and relief pitcher Paul Clemens picked up the loss. Erik surrendered four runs before he left. Boone Logan picked up his second win of the
season and now has a 2-1 record.
Bo Porter felt that the pitching was one thing that was causing the team issues and it will need to improve. He was all praise for Clemens and the bullpen that did a fine backup job but the damage had already been done by then.
"Deep counts again," Porter said. "The base on balls really hurt us early, and that kind of got his pitch count going. I'll tell you what, Clemens came in and did a great job and kind of held it at bay.”
The Astros; offense had their brightest moment in the fourth innings when they were able to post four runs and came to even terms with the Yankees. The hosts, however, took the lead once again in the sixth inning and the Astros were unable to score again.
The road trip has been a mixed bag for the Astros, they lost to the Boston Red Sox 4-0 in the start and were able to stage a comeback when they smashed the Yankees in the first game of the series 9-1. The series remained competitive though the New York ballclub
prevailed in the end.
The signs for the Astros are good and if they can transform good performances in to great ones, there is no reason why they cannot win more games.
