Houston Astros make their mark with a 16-9 win over Seattle Mariners - MLB News
The Houston Astros surrendered four runs in the bottom of the ninth, enough on most occasions to lose a game. However, this time around, the opposing numbers still lost by a large margin.
The Astros entered the game with a 1-6 losing record. The team has been at the bottom of Major League Baseball for two seasons now and the initial results did point in similar direction. Although it is too early to predict, the game on Tuesday, April 9 does
show some promise and fight from the Astros.
The Seattle Mariners had given up 13 runs by the fourth inning and were only able to score in the bottom of the fifth. By that time, the game was all but a lost cause.
The Houston ballclub will take heart from the fact that the batters got 22 hits, including five home-runs. Chris Carter homered twice. Jose Altuve, J.D. Martinez and Marwin Gonzalez all went long once.
Bo Porter, who was appointed by the Astros as their manager at the end of the last season, earned his first away win as a manager. There was certainly some relief for him as his team broke a bad losing streak.
"It was only a matter of time," said Bo Porter. "We've had confidence the whole time they can hit. It was unfortunate the games prior to tonight that we had not hit, but it was good to see."
Astros’ opening pitcher Erik Bedard threw down four scoreless innings and gave away just a single hit. By the time he called it a night, his ball club had 13 runs to the better.
The pitcher threw down 66 pitches and was pleased with the outcome. Erik said that he does not like to change a lot and the idea always is to keep on attacking the strike zone and let the rest take care of itself.
"I don't change anything," said Bedard. "I throw like it was a 0-0 game and you can't let the score do too much to the way you want to throw. You keep battling, you keep throwing strikes and the rest will take care of itself."
Eric Wedge, the manager for the Seattle Mariners wants his pitcher to stay in good spirits. He said that he told Brando Maurer to keep his head high as games like this take place. Brando gave away seven runs in under three innings before being retired.
The game will certainly provide Bo Porter and his boys with a lot of confidence. It is important that they gain some momentum and continue the good work.
They are in a group of teams that some believe is the hardest in all of MLB. It will certainly take a lot of effort to be successful amongst these teams.
