Houston Astros making moves on the roster - MLB News
The Houston Astros right now are all about change. Lately, they have been actively making changes as they have a new manager in Bo Porter and some new coaches with a couple more on the way. The team has made more roster changes on Thursday, November 1.
Five players, including Edgar Gonzalez, Jose Valdez, Kyle Weiland, Fernando Abad and Sergio Escalona were out-righted. They join infielder Matt Downs on the list. Abad, Valdez, Gonzalez, downs and Escalona are all free agents now.
Atlanta Braves claimed outfielder Jordan Schafer on waivers. Schafer has had a previous association with the Braves organisation between 2005 and 2011. s******r did not have a very productive 2012, hitting only at an average of .211 in 313 at-bats with a
106 strike-outs. He was plagued by injuries for the better part of the season. There were also some issues with the attitude, making him out of favour with the Astros and prompting him to be waived off. The 26-year-old has had a history of behavioural issues
and brushes with the law as well.
Astros also claimed a couple of players through waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks. These include pitcher Sam Demel and infielder Jake Elmore. Astros current 40 man roster stands at 36.
Jake Elmore had an excellent season with the Triple-A Reno, with a hitting average of .344. Representing the team in 108 games in the 2012 season, the 25-year-old managed 73 RBI’s and 30 doubles. He has played for the D-Backs this year, representing them
in 30 games.
Demel spent most part of the 2012 season with the Triple-A Reno, making 56 relief appearances with a 4.07 ERA. The 27-year-old managed 75 strike-outs in just over 66 innings. He has made 72 Major League appearances for the Diamondbacks in the last three
years, managing just one in the 2012 season.
The right-handed pitcher Abad made 37 appearances for the Astros in 2012 with a 5.09ERA, including six games as a starting pitcher. He made a total of 88 appearances for the Astros in three seasons.
Gonzalez made six starts for the Astros in the 2012 season with a 3-1 win-loss record. The left-handed pitcher had a 5.04 ERA. He has so far played in eight Major League seasons representing four different teams.
Valdez made 12 relief appearances for the Astros after being called up in the later part of the season. The 29-year-old pitcher from Dominican Republic had a 2.25 ERA.
Edgar Escalona missed the entire season due to surgery in March. Weiland also missed nearly the entire season due to an infection in the shoulder. He has been put on the roster of Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The Astros have four spots still available on the 40 man roster and it will be interesting to see how they go about filling them. Some good players can certainly help in moving the team in the right direction and towards better results in the 2013 Major
League Baseball season.
