Houston Astros recently appointed manager Bo Porter was honoured in his home state of New Jersey as the Essex County declared December 13, 2012 as the ‘’Essex County Bo Porter Day.’’ Bo Porter was also presented with a key of Essex County.
Porter was also presented with a jacket of North Ward Little League and Weequahic High School retired the No.1 Jersey in his honour; the number he wore when he was at the school. He also received proclamations New Jersey State Sen. Teresa Ruiz and from the
speaker of the assembly Sheila Oliver. State Sheriff and a number of other notable political personalities were also present on the occasion.
Bo was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1972. He is the first native of New Jersey to be managing a Major League team in the modern era. Previously three other residents of New Jersey had the honour but all of them were in charge prior to 1900.
Porter was raised in his home town of Newark and graduated from Weequahic High School. He was not only an outstanding baseball player but did wonder in basketball and football as well and was a State All-Star player in all three.
Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. was delighted on the occasion and was pleased that Bo has achieved in a lot in life. Joseph said that he has seen him grow and attain greater heights.
“Today is exceptionally rewarding to me because I have watched Bo Porter mature and grow from the time he played Little League baseball with our All-Star team that traveled to Puerto Rico to being the first Essex County resident chosen to lead an professional
baseball team. He persevered throughout his career and to be the first Essex County resident named as manager of a Major League team is quite an honor,” DiVincenzo, Jr. said.
Bo Porter, who has been associated with baseball in some capacity for the last 18 years, was himself pleased on the occasion and said that his background had helped him get to the point where he now stands.
"A lot of people may look at where I came from and think it’s a negative," Porter said. "But I think it’s my strongest suit."
Bo Porter has indeed made great achievements during his career and one hopes he can continue the good work as a manager as well. He has got a lot of challenges up ahead of him; the most important one would be to motivate the Astros team to turn around form
the two years of 100 plus defeats in a season.
Looking at how he has operated all through his career, one can certainly say that he will give it his all and should come out successful at the other end.
