Houston Astros mark the beginning of Spring Training – MLB News
The Houston Astros had the first day of their Spring Training on Monday, February 20, to formally brace themselves for the new season. With 28 pitchers and seven catchers present in the camp on Monday, the Astros have enunciated their intention to radically
alter everything this year.
The club which did not have a very satisfactory record during the past season, losing over 100 games, has a lot to put in order as they have got a new owner now. Jim Crane, the new owner of the Astros, also showed up on Monday to oversee the ongoing Spring
Training.
"I'm feeling my way around," he said. "It's a nice facility and everybody has settled in and everybody is ready to go to work. The conversation this morning was [to tell them] to work hard. There are a lot of positions up for grabs. I think everybody is
focused."
While for Brad Mills – the team manager, this marks the new drawing of a new era, the pitcher John Lyles attaches big importance to the developments in the last few months. With the arrival of new owner and the induction of a lot of rookies infallibly show
the re-building phase of the club.
“It's going to be a young clubhouse with young guys trying to mesh together," Lyles said. "We'll go through some growing pains, and hopefully we can make it work and hopefully the fans will be excited about the type of play we bring on the field every day."
The whole team realises that it is a relatively young side where every player has got a chance to grab a spot, as they also know that they face enormous challenges ahead. After all, it is not only the ambition that brings the desired result for any team.
The club knows that the experience has got an ultimately decisive role to play in determining the future course. Nonetheless, the club indeed has a long way to go to demonstrate their efficacy as a strong side in the Major League Baseball where they can
get on any competitive team and win a victory. It will be exciting to see how the Astros perform during Spring Training as they get ready for the upcoming 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
