Houston Astros overpower Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 to clinch series - MLB Update
The Houston Astros romped to a 2-1 victory in the rubber outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers, at Minute Maid Park on Wednesday, May 25 to clinch a three-game home-series by 2-1.
The Astros’ starter, Aneury Rodriguez, swept away the Dodgers’ starter Ted Lilly to help his club earn their 19th triumph of the series.
As Michael Bourn launched a led off homer in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead for the Dodgers, Rodriquez held the Astros scoreless until he gave a score-tying homer to Matt Kemp in the sixth inning. Rodriguez threw six innings, allowed four hits,
walked one and struck-out five batters.
Lilly, on the other hand, after allowing a homer in the first inning bounced back in a strong manner and stayed scoreless in his remaining innings. Lilly allowed six hits, walked one and struck out two batters over six innings.
A homer struck on a pitch Lilly considered a mistake and said, "I consider it a mistake and good hitting. He got a good pitch to hit and he did not miss it. More than anything, it was a thing where I guessed wrong. I thought he would take to begin the game.
That one mistake cost us the game you could say. It was a mental error more than anything."
Both starters received a strong back-up from the relievers. Astros’ relievers, Wilton Lopez, Jeff Fulchino and closer Mark Melancon each threw one no-score inning to confirm their win. On the other hand, the Dodgers’ relievers Mike MacDougal and Javy Guerra
tossed strong innings.
The game was tied at 1-all in the ninth inning, when the Dodgers’ closer Matt Guerrier gave way a defeat-earning run to Astros’ Justin Roberts Towles. Brett Wallace doubled to deep centre off Guerrier and then Towles drove in a line drive to centre, allowing
score to Brian Bogusevic, who was running for Wallace.
"I was trying to get the ball away from Matt Kemp," Wallace said. "He's a really good centre fielder and I was just praying it got away from him. I did not know if it would get out or off the wall. I was just watching to see what he would do."
Jeff Nelson was supervising the game at Home Plate while Marty Foster, Bill Welke and Mike Estabrook were umpiring at first, second and third base respectively.
