Houston Astros replace Jed Lowrie with Brian Bixler - MLB News
The Houston Astros on Friday, April 06, made the inevitable move of replacing Jed Lowrie with Brian Bixler. Lowrie has now been put in the disabled list at a time when he was expected to show up in Sunday’s game where the Houston Astros are expected to put up stiff resistance.
The player will be in 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 29. Lowrie had the right thumb sprain that was predicted to have some effect on the player. It eventually had as the team on Friday decided to bring in Bixler to replace him.
Bixler is an infielder and also plays as outfielder who will be playing at least six games because Lowrie is expected to miss the first six games of the season.
Lowrie spoke to the media on Friday, detailing what happened and what is on the cards for and the team as a whole in the days to come as far as his position at shortstop is concerned. He was actually informed by the team general manager Jeff Luhnow what decision has been made by the Houston Astros.
"Jeff made the call this morning and told me they decided to put me on the DL and told me to get ready for the Miami series [April 13-15)," Lowrie said. "Some of the decisions are out of my control, but I'm not going to let it get me down because I've made such good progress. I already hit today and felt better again. The plan is to take batting practice [Saturday] and we'll go from there."
The player wants to be in shape to play as soon as possible. "I want to get it feeling good as soon as possible," he said.
After Clint Barmes who missed the last year’s Opening Day game, Lowrie is the second shortstop to miss the first game of the season.
In the absence of Lowrie, nonetheless, the Houston Astros expect it is Bixler who will be able to do the needed for the team. The Houston Astros do indeed require good performance at shortstop so as to make the right combination for the team.
