Houston Astros sign Carlos Pena – MLB Update
The Houston Astros suffered some humiliating results in the past Major League Baseball season. As the 2012 season was ended, the Houston management started preparing an offensive game for the next season to avoid last season’s poor outcome.
One of their offseason agenda was to add a good hitter in the roster. They searched several of good available hitters and finalised to add former Tampa Bay Rays Carlos Pena to a one-year deal.
The deal is worth $2.9 million which is a healthy sign for the Astros. Pena showed consistent results in the past Major League Baseball season with an exceptional hitting average of .197 along with 19 home runs, 61 RBIs and .330 OBP.
Overall he possesses .234 hitting average along with 277 home runs, 791 RBIs and .350 OBP which also makes him a good role player in the league.
“We believe he is exactly the kind of player we need in this organization at this time, We think that he’s going to be a big contributor for us on the field as well as in the clubhouse next year,” Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said on Monday and talked about new signing Pena and his arrival’s different aspects.
He added, “I think he provides some flexibility because he’s a left-handed batter who can play a good first base defensively, So that gives you some options ... he can still play very good first base, and we expect to see him at first base a little bit.”
Pena later said and explained about his new beginning with the Astros and hoped for a thrilling season, There are so many things that I have to improve.”
Experts are also saying now that this new relationship between Astros and Pena is quite a healthy sign which will bring stability in Houston’s results next season onwards.
Pena is highly talented individual and possesses experience of playing for several Major League teams. He started his career in 2001 with Texas Rangers’ platform and later went onto play with Oakland Athletics, Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Chicago Cubs.
