Houston Astros sign Fernando Martinez – MLB News
The Houston Astros is gradually pursuing the rebuilding phase as they signed Fernando Martinez from the New York Mets. Martinez had remained a prospect, but injuries would ward him off from regularly appearing for the team.
The New York Mets had brought him in the team when the player seemed to be at the best times of his career. However, it was otherwise unexpected injuries that shattered the hopes of both him and the team to see him contribute for the club.
The predicament was that he could only appear in 82 games in three years at the Minor League. That proved utterly disappointing for him. From arthritic right knee to injuries of different sorts, Martinez was out more in the disabled-list than being able
to be on the field and perform.
However, all this will not or cannot, obstruct the Houston Astros’ general manager Jeff Luhnow to aggressively pursue the player for the club. Like Luhnow put, he had been looking at the performance of this player extensively, for quite a while now.
"I have been scouting [Martinez] since he was 16 years old before he signed with the Mets as a free agent from the Dominican and watched him extensively over the years," Astros’ general manager Jeff Luhnow said. "I was always interested in him, and our scouts
here liked him. I was at the Caribbean Series a few years back when he was the MVP.”
According to him, despite all the injuries, the player has got what it takes to thrive as a player. "The kid has some big league tools and he's very young, and I think a change of scenery may be exactly what he needs to blossom into full potential.”
He has remained in different teams of the Minor League where his averages have varied on different occasions. Once he is brought in the Astros, it will be interesting to see how the 23-year-old player gives his best. For now, the Astros will have him in
the club to demonstrate his characteristic brilliance for the team and for the betterment of his own record as well.
