Houston Astros sign Wandy Rodriguez to three-year $34 million deal – MLB News
It looks like the Houston Astros have managed to avoid arbitration as they were able to sign Wandy Rodriguez to a three-year $34 million contract that will last up to 2013 with an option for 2014 for an additional $10.5 million.
The Astros and Rodriguez are satisfied with the deal, as he will receive a $1.5 million signing bonus with a salary of $7 million for the 2011 season. Rodriguez will get $10 million for 2012 and $13 million for 2013.
Rodriguez had hoped to avoid arbitration and finalise a deal with the Astros as soon as possible. The Astros’ general manager Ed Wade made the following comment about the deal with Rodriguez.
"This is one of the top left-handed starters in the game," general manager Ed Wade said. "(He was) a year away from free agency, so to be able to be able to do three years guaranteed, with a fourth-year option, made all the sense in the world for us."
Rodriguez had a decent performance in the last season with the Astros as he managed to get in 13 starts with an 11-12 record and an ERA of 3.60. In 195 innings, he struck-out 178 with 68 walks.
Wandy has made it clear that he loves it here and he wants to be a part of the Astros," Wade said. "He's a guy who's come through our system and we're excited to be able to extend that relationship."
Rodriguez has been with the Astros since he began his MLB career. His overall career stats sit at a 62-64 record with an ERA of 4.18, 838 strike-outs and 353 walks in 985 impressive innings.
With the new deal finalised, it will be interesting to see what type of impact Wandy has on the Astros’ pitching rotation. The team will be looking for a repeat of his performance from last season. The Astros are desperate for a successful regular season
with the possibility of making it into the playoffs. With Rodriguez at the mound for the Astros, anything is possible.
