Houston Astros take down Chicago White Sox 2-1 at Minute Maid Park – MLB news
Houston Astros took down Chicago White Sox 2-1 in a neck-to-neck competition at the Minute Maid Park on Friday, June 14, 2013. The game was dominated by strong pitching from both ends.
It was a low scoring affair which could have gone longer that it actually did had there not been a throwing error during the bottom of the fifth.
The Astros, who have show great signs of improvement recently, fought tooth and nail and got the nod of approval from Bo Porter, their manager. He praised the overall performance and how the guys played in a game that saw some brilliant pitching.
“That there is what you call just straight effort baseball,” said Porter. “Guys laying out on infield hits, giving it everything they have and hustling on the bases. It's an all-around tremendous effort to get that against one of the more dominant pitchers
in our league.”
Erik Bedard, the starting pitcher for the Houston ballclub, was pleased with his performance as he was able to retire the batters in a hurry after some initial difficulties.
“I had a couple innings with a lot of pitches early, but I got stronger and was throwing a lot more strikes later to get the quick outs,” Bedard said.
The pitcher threw down six innings and improved his record against the Chicago ballclub to 4-2 win-loss record. Jose Veras was able to record his 12th save of the season.
The pitching by Chris Sale was pretty amazing as well as he struck out 14 batters. He recorded a loss even though he just allowed a single earned run in the game.
The lone run for the White Sox came through a sacrifice fly by Adam Dunn in the fourth innings. The Astros were able to score two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Bo Porter felt that the way the game was played showed the resilience of his boys that they have had all year long.
“This game speaks to the resilience these guys have played with all year,” Porter said.
The Astros certainly are a much improved outfit when compared with the previous two seasons. It is important that they are performing well in tight games and are able to win these as well.
