Houston Astros throw Milwaukee Brewers out of playoff hunt with 7-0 win – MLB News
Jordan Lyles tossed his first shut-out game of the season on Sunday, September 30, to help the Houston Astros beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-0 at Miller Park. The astounding Astros victory formally put an end to the Brewers race for the Wild Card spot, eliminating them from their hunt for a playoff berth.
Brewers, who had been making inroads since August did not probably expect to be overwhelmed by the Astros, a team that stands at the bottom of the National League Central. Brewers 27-12 record since August 19, an effort that they hoped would lead to their entering into the playoffs.
Astros beat the Brewers 2-1 in the three-game series.
"For us to come out and get shut out, that was probably the last thing that I thought would happen," Brewers' manager Ron Roenicke said. "I thought we'd come out and play a good series here against Houston and we didn't. It's hard right now. To play as well as we did to get back in it, this was a very disappointing series."
As the batters did their bid, Lyles was simply impressive. The starter who had a 1-7 record, which is pretty poor, was at his best at Miller Park, frustrating the Brewers' batters.
"He had a little more fire in his eye it looked like," Astros' manager Tony DeFrancesco said expressing his excitement with the tremendous performance of Lyles. "He was aggressive in the zone, had a good breaking ball. That's a real good hitting team to shut down."
It was the Mike Fiers whom the Astros' batters took to task in Sunday’s game. Fiers gave up five runs in his six innings.
Tyler Greene doubled to deep centre in the third inning, Fernando Martinez, Matt Dominguez and Jed Lowrie scored respective solo homers to guide the team to an incredible 7-0 win for the Astros.
Astros hit a total of 11 home-runs in the last three games that spoke volumes for their outstanding show at Miller Park. The fact that Lyles himself smashed a homer added double joy to his scintillating performance in Sunday’s game.
