Houston Astros unveil new logos, uniforms for 2013 season - MLB News
There was no shortage of excitement amongst the fans and the players at the unveiling of the new Houston Astros’ logos, uniforms, colour schemes and mascot. The unveiling ceremony took place Friday evening.
In attendance there were thousands of Astros’ fans, the team management and players from yester-years, today and tomorrow. The latest uniforms carry team’s historical theme. The blue and orange theme resembles the uniforms the team wore in 1962 through 1993.
Jim Crane, the owner of the Houston Astros gave his approval to the new uniform. "I like the look of the new uniforms," Crane said. "I think they're clean and it has a little bit of history in them. I think the fans will enjoy them."
Crane, general manager Jeff Luhnow and newly appointed manager Bo Porter briefly addressed the gathering. A sneak peak was provided to the crowd via short video presentation before the players walked on to the field in the latest Astros’ colours.
All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve, pitchers Jordan Lyles and Lucas Harrell, outfielder Justin Maxwell and top Minor League prospects George Springer, Jarred Cosart, Carlos Correa and Jonathan Singleton displayed the new uniforms on the field.
In its first major uniform change since 2000, the team presented two logos, three new hats and four uniform designs that the team will be wearing in the 2013 season. The team will now move out of the National League to the American League. The new uniforms
were developed after extensive research. The fans had a say as well, whose feedback was given due importance.
"We did a lot of research and we certainly wanted to make sure we got something that was appealing to everybody," Crane said. "We did a lot of work and spent a lot of time, and we feel comfortable when we rolled it out it was going to be a hit.”
The home uniform will be white with orange piping and the road jersey will be grey with blue piping. The players will also wear the orange jersey with blue piping in some home and away games. The team will wear a blue top with rainbow print down the side
in batting practices only. This will be a tribute to the jerseys the team wore from 1975-1979 and from 1980-1986 in their home games.
Orbit, the Astros’ mascot in the 90’s also made a return at the end of the event as the new mascot of the team, much to the delight of many fans. The current Junction Jack rabbit was dropped as the mascot. The fans approved of the new gear in general and
by the initial feedback, it seems quite likely that the new attire will be an instant hit. The Astros’ shop at the Minute Maid Park will remain open this weekend to provide the fans with the latest gear. The merchandise will also be available at Houston-area
Academy stores under a weeklong exclusive agreement to sell the gear with them.
The new gear of the Astros is certainly exciting. We can hope that the team will have some great moments in the coming seasons in their new attire in a new league.
