Houston Cougars geared up for another great season – Volleyball News
After achieving an overall record of 19-11 in the previous season, the University of Houston women’s volleyball team is ready to kick start another great season. Under the command of head coach Kaddie Platt, the Cougars are totally in shape to embrace the
new challenges.
According to the announced schedule, Cougars are set to appear in a total of three tournaments and 12 home matches during the 2012 season. Later in the year, they will play the conference USA (C-USA) matches.
Houston Cougars will make their way to Ohio State for the first tournament of the year, the Sports Imports Classic. They will meet the hosts Ohio State volleyball team in the season-opener on Friday, August 24. Next up, the Cougars will take a road trip
to Nashville, Tennessee. The Lipscomb’s tournament will put the team to another test of skills and temperament. Teams from Missouri, Appalachian State, and Lipscomb will cross ways with the Cougars from August 31-September 1.
After playing two tournaments away from home, the Houston Cougars will set up the field of play for Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup at the Alumni Centre. The tournament will take place from September 14-15 and it will feature strong teams such as Florida State,
Pepperdine, and Ohio State. Hosts will appear in a total of three matches. It will mark the second year in a row and fourth in the last five years that University of Houston will provide the backdrop for this tournament.
Speaking about the regular tournaments of the season, Platt stated: “There will be some great volleyball in Houston with an outstanding field of teams in the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup.  All three opponents finished among the Top 25 in the nation a year ago.”
In the next run, the Cougars will begin the Conference USA slate. Houston squad will meet Rice Owls, UAB, and Memphis. Cougars will play fourth conference match against Tulsa at home.
The team has already started the preseason practice in the first week of August. The new head coach of the Cougars, Kaddie Platt, has worked out great many plans for her team. She stated: “Our schedule provides quality competition in both conference and
non-conference play.  Playing nine matches against 2011 tournament teams will challenge us to develop into the best team we can be,” said Platt. 2012 will offer many opportunities for great volleyball.  The schedule has potential to provide a solid RPI, which
will help us as we aim for post-season play.”
