Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey thinks Kyle Lowry and Kevin McHale can function together – NBA Update
Houston Rockets point guard Kyle Lowry created a storm recently by stating that as long as Kevin McHale is the head coach, he will not return to the team. That has created a situation for the Rockets and general manager Daryl Morey has made a statement to pacify the situation somewhat.
He made these comments keeping in mind that these two have not had that much time to get together and are expected to overcome their differences in the off season leading up to next season.
“I think Kyle and coach McHale are both winners and both competitive guys,” Morey said. “I don’t anticipate any issues going forward.”
McHale, who was surprised Lowry’s outburst, was forced to test out Goran Dragic after Lowry got injured midway through the season. To everybody’s surprise, Dragic made the opportunity count and pulled off one great performance after another, ultimately reducing the minutes of Lowry.
Morey also said that as Dragic`s contract expires with the team, they are inclined to resign him in order for them continue their rebuilding process.
In Lowry`s absence due to a bacterial infection, Dragic ran the Rocket offence like clockwork while averaging 11.7 points per game during the regular season. He also averaged 5.3 assists and 1.3 steals in the season.
Morey also expressed his intentions of keeping both players with the team;
“I think they work well together as players,” Morey said. “We plan to sign Goran.”

Lowry considers Dragic worthy of the attention, but he said having both point guards likely would not work”
The pressing concern for the Rockets is that Lowry has maintained that both of them cannot play together and given the amount of talent they both possess, they should be starters on a team.
“I would say I don’t think so,” Lowry said. “We’re both capable starters. We both want it. It’s going to have to be a situation where they make a decision on one of us”.
Lowry has put his franchise in a very tricky situation. They certainly cannot let go of McHale, who has transformed an average team into playoff contenders and will want to retain Lowry. But, given the rather selfish outburst, the Rockets might be forced to trade him.
