Houston Rockets looking to amnesty Luis Scola – NBA Report
Houston Rockets have been a team looking to make some big time moves in order to get out of NBA’s middle ground - a situation which they have been stuck in for the past couple of seasons. This has led them to make some intriguing
decisions during the summer.
The Rockets have let go of both their point guards, Kyle Lowry and Goran Dragic, this off season and according to recent reports, Rockets general manager Daryl Morey has taken a step ahead in the re-building process by letting
go of Argentinean power forward Luis Scola who still has three years left on his contract worth $21 million.
This latest decision amnesty clause on Scola may have its setbacks in the short term but the desire to eventually be considered in the upper echelon of the league has forced the Rockets management in taking the risk.
In the current times when quality big men are a rarity in the NBA, the Argentinean may not be All-Star material but his desire to continuously excel in his trait has reaped benefits for him and Houston in the past. Scola had an
average of 15.5 points and 6.5 rebounds last season and mustered up 18 points per game a year before that, making him probably the best player to be amnestied during this off-season.
By amnestying Scola, the Rockets have increased the possibility of landing Dwight Howard from Orlando Magic. After acquiring several first round picks in this year’s draft and now by knocking off Scola’s salary of their books,
the Rockets find themselves in a perfect position to land the signature of the unarguably the best centre in the league. They can easily absorb the contracts of Hedo Turkoglu and Jason Richardson in any pitch for the big man and in doing so; have taken the
Los Angeles Lakers off the market.
Even though Howard has previously stated that he would not be signing any long term deals with a franchise that is not of his choice, but if the Rockets are able to lure him in for more than a year, they could make more moves till
the mid season and surround him with quality players, now that they have enough cap space available.
Even if this current scenario does not pan out well for Houston, they have enough young picks and cap space to immediately start a re-building process.
