Houston Rockets’ poor handling of the Royce White situation creates a mess: NBA Feature
What really is this fuss about this Houston Rockets rookie Royce White? He has a general anxiety problem, so what it’s not much big of a deal. Athletes all over the world have problems like these; the Rockets seem to have made
quite a mess of things.
It’s very difficult to judge who is more responsible for this fall out but one thing is for sure, that the Rockets have handled the situation very poorly.
The last thing a person wants, who fears to fly in a plane, is his name popping all over the news. The Rockets have done just that. Moreover they have allowed the media and the fans to jump to conclusions, that his lack of playing
is the prime reason for the situation. Royce is not helping with his statements to the press and his twitter feeds either, as the situation continues to escalate.
Let’s hear the rookie’s end of the story first.
White said he used to believe in the slogan ‘honesty is the best policy’, but not anymore, so he laid open his weaknesses, trusting that the Rockets will help in him with coping his anxiety disorders (fear or flying) after the
Houston has assessed that the risks were worth it when they signed him this season. He seemed to be going ok for a while but in the last few weeks the rift between him and the Rockets has grown manifold after he claimed that the Rockets have been “inconsistent”
in its agreement to help him out with his anxiety syndrome.
“In hindsight, perhaps it was not a good idea to be open and honest about my anxiety disorder — due to the current situations at hand that involve the nature of actions from the Houston Rockets. As a rookie, I want to settle into
a team and make progress; but since preseason, the Rockets have been inconsistent with their agreement to proactively create a healthy and successful relationship.” said Royce.
The rookie believes that opening up to the Rockets has been a bad call. And he claims he is not being treated well. But I assure you, that the Rockets handling of this situation has been far worse.
It’s not all Rockets fault actually, they have been quite patient with him so far, they have been paying a guy who has not played a single game this season and who misses practice sessions at will. They also hired Dr. Aaron Fink
of Baylor College of Medicine, to treat his condition, but White did not attend those sessions. Yeah Houston agreed to him travelling by bus to some games this season, but both parties also agreed on working on his anxiety problem and these type of syndrome’s
don’t go away if the person himself is not putting in his full effort to overcome his fears.
Royce has a lot of potential in him; there is no doubt about it. I for one will like to see him play at the Houston. Raptors will also like to make use of his talents. They agreed to support this guy at the beginning and they need
to keep supporting him all the way. Yeah helping him may have proved to be more difficult than they would have initially imagined, but they need to be persistent. The best way to go may be will be to give him a start in a game and hope for the best.
