Houston Rockets show interest in Los Angeles Lakers’ assistant coach Brian Shaw – NBA News
After firing head coach Rick Adelman, the Houston Rockets are now looking high and low to find an appropriate person for the job.
For this very reason, Houston has asked for authorisation from the Los Angeles Lakers, so they can speak with their assistant coach Brian Shaw about their head coaching job.
Since the Lakers will be playing against Dallas Mavericks from Monday in Game 1 of the second-round series, Shaw cannot go for an interview as per Team policies. This restricts the Lakers coach from interviewing for another job when a play-off series is
proceeding.
Therefore Shaw either had to take the interview with the Rockets before, or after the conclusion of the series.
On Saturday’s practice session Shaw made it clear that he had not heard anything directly from the Rockets. However, if he is been approached, he would prefer to give an interview after the series rather than sooner, as currently he is occupied with the
Lakers, Maverick series.
Shaw began his career with the Lakers as an assistant coach back in 2004-05 NBA season after retiring as a professional basketball player. He was a member of the Lakers squad during their 2000, 2001 and 2002 championship run.
45-year-old Shaw is the top contender to replace 11-time championship winning coach Phil Jackson, as he is expected to retire after this season.
Lakers All-Star Kobe Bryant has also endorsed Shaw as Jackson’s replacement. Less than a month ago in an interview Bryant said, “I feel all of the players believe in coach B-Shaw. We have such a rapport with him. He’s been with us for such a long time. We
all have a bit of a bias towards him. I don’t want to get in the way of management. But we’ve all kind of had our eye on him for a while. He’s tough. I think when his time comes he’ll be ready.”
The Rockets are already in talks with the assistant coach of Milwaukee Bucks Kelvin Sampson, to interview him for the position. He is famous for his previous assignments with Oklahoma University and Indiana University.
If the Indiana Pacers decide not to continue with their interim head coach Frank Vogel, then he will be another expected candidate for the Rockets head coach job.
Earlier Shaw gave an interview for the Cleveland Cavaliers head coach post, but took his name out in the last moment before the Cavaliers announced Byron Scott.
The Golden State Warriors have also fired their coach Keith Smart on April 27, as they won just 36 games under him. Therefore, the Warriors are now in search to hire a new coach as well and there is a high-probability that Shaw can grab their attention for
the vacancy.
