Houston Texans DC Wade Phillips the luckiest coach in town – NFL feature
Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips arrived in Houston to coach defence of the Texans in 2011. The year was the luckiest for the team. They managed to be through to the playoffs, after winning the American Football Conference (AFC) South division title,
for the first time in their franchise history.
The team had tremendously progressed on the defence, from being among the few bottom-ranked teams to be among the top-five teams in the National Football League (NFL). The credit of building the strong defensive unit was of course to new defensive coordinator.
So Wade in a sense was lucky to guide the team through to the playoffs in his first year, and was seen as a good omen for the side. It was a rare feat for the coach as well that he helped a side to new winning heights in his very first year.
It was not just one playoffs, the Texans are almost unstoppable since then, and this has provided a reason to the coach to believe he has certainly contributed towards building a better future for them.
This is based on strong defences. The team’s performance on the defensive line has helped and complemented effort of their offence to admittedly a larger extent. If the offence is worried about piling up points against them, their performance stands affected.
Since the team has one of the strongest defence line in the league, the offence is able to rip through opposition lines more successfully and more often. Coach Gary Kubiak and offence leader quarterback Matt Schaub have admitted the role of Phillips in leading
the team to a comfortable position on the defence line that makes the offence go worry-free.
Most importantly, the Texans have continuously progressed through in the league as a stronger defence side. Their current rating is also commendable, and they are not done yet. The rating might improve further given they still have many more games left this
season and the way they started the season it appears they will progress consistently well in all departments and at all positions.
Overall, the team has stayed among top-five strongest defences, which is a rare feat achieved by any side so consistently well.
Texans’ is one of the most successful career stints for Phillips, and may well be for any coach with a side. The most important thing happened to Phillips is that the players have a tremendous faith in him and both sides are thriving on mutually developed
best working terms. This is a key to success for the both sides.
