Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub says not being carried away by deal matter – NFL News
Houston Texans’ star quarterback, Matt Schaub, says he is focused on his game and not worried about approaching expiry of his contract this year.
Recently, a number of reports have hinted at the interest of the player to get an extension from the team, which so far remains a far cry given both parties are no way closer to start talking the matter.
Matt has denied he is worried about his new deal issue, apparently resigning to the situation as it develops along the last year of his current contract. There is no clue if and when are Texans willing to land him a new contract.
The QB said of the contract situation:
“To me, it’s just about focusing on your job, getting ready to go, and guys go through it every year. It’s just a matter of getting some things done, but you’ve got to go out and you’ve got to get healthy and you’ve got to get ready to play and go out and
prove it on the field. So I‘m just looking forward to just going out and playing and not worrying about that.”
Schaub aims to return to the squad by training camp later this month 100 percent recovered from Lisfranc surgery he had in November 2011.
Whether Texans are willing to give him a long-term extension is a big question.
The team has another option of an equal calibre in the second-year QB, T.J. Yates, who courtesy of his impressive rookie year performance helped the side to the playoffs and win of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division championship, for the
first time in their franchise history.
Since Yates has already proven his skills as a starter, there is a possibility that Texans see him as a long-term investment option, instead of betting on their old horse for future.
Yet the team is aware of Schaub’s role in the side, and almost all commentators agree that Texans could have done far better had the incumbent veteran QB been there last season.
Away from the lingering deal question, Schaub is due to attend training camp later this month.
