Houston Texans add rookie QB Case Keenum as backup for Matt Schaub-NFL News
Houston Texans are going to unveil their rookie quarterback, Case Keenum, in the near future, most likely to be placed at a backup position, just behind Matt Schaub, the regular QB.
Keenum, hailing from Houston College, unfortunately was left untouched during the 2012 draft, but now has a chance to sign a deal with Texans as an undrafted free agent.
The player expressed excitement over his prospects of joining Texans, saying he could not believe to have been offered a place in a team he's been a fan of.
He said:
"It's really unbelievable. I'm extremely excited for so many reasons."
Keenum will be playing as a backup for Schaub, who is coming back to the squad after missing quite a few games last season due to a broken foot.
Schaub reportedly called the rookie QB and welcomed him to the side.
He will also be playing along with T.J.Yates, who is coming into the 2012 NFL season in the second year of his professional career.
Yates played a great role in the team’s success last season, reaching the playoffs after winning the American Football Conference (AFC) South Division, both for the first time in the franchise's history.
With Schaub and Matt Leinart out with their respective injury issues, the leading QB position was entrusted upon Yates, and he proved to be successful in the role.
Texans have already released Leinart this year.
There is no news if they are going to retain veterans, Jake Delhomme and Jeff Garcia, to backup positions. Both joined the team last year.
The team was quarterback-thin at one stage of the season and sought help of the veterans to come out of their retirement to play another NFL season.
This year, it is quite likely that Texans would go with Schaub and Yates at the number 1 and 2 positions, respectively, leaving the veterans and rookie, Keenum, at backup positions.
There is also a possibility that one of the veterans’ release any time before the start of this regular season might accommodate the rookie on the roster.
