Houston Texans’ coach Gary Kubiak backs Case Keenum for great pro career -NFL News
Houston Texans’ head coach, Gary Kubiak, has rated rookie quarterback, Case Keenum, as a player of rich talent and great potential.
The coach thinks that the rookie has a great career ahead of him in the National Football League (NFL) even though the player is hardly able to embrace the pro game conditions.
Kubiak said:
"It's interesting because for him to go play under center - he'd never done it - that hasn't been a problem at all."
He added:
"Now, it's just kind of getting used to playing under there from a standpoint off seeing things and verbiage. There is a lot of verbiage in our offense and I don’t think there was much at Houston, if I'm right, so he's having to adjust to that. He is very
smart. He's a diligent worker, and that's all you can ask for."
Irrespective of the coach’s remarks, the player is yet to adapt to the pro environment challenges. A real test for him will be in the regular season when he performs in real setting and conditions.
The coach, however, is optimistic about the player’s prospects, saying he is learning fast and picking up things swiftly.
Keenum, who is taking part in organised team activities (OTAs), is said to be benefiting from the experience of the incumbent QB, Matt Schaub.
It is an opportunity for the rookie to learn from skills and experience of Schaub and T. J. Yates. The latter is in the second year of his pro career with Texans.
Yates was the leading performer for the Houston Texans in the 2011 National Football league (NFL) season, after the team lost Schaub and then Matt Leinart to respective injury problems.
Since the management has released Leinart now, Keenum can potentially have a considerable role as a backup for Schaub or Yates.
However, there is also a possibility that the player might not get many chances in presence of Schaub at the starting position with John Beck and Yates competing for the number 2 slot.
The team has great depth at the position but given the circumstances the team went through last year, becoming quarterback-thin at one point, Keenum can earn opportunities.
