Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak backs RB, special teams to step up game – NFL News
Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak is not satisfied with running back Arian Foster and other rushers’ effort in the first game of the season, although they won it convincingly.
The team totalled 83 rushing yards, including 79 yards of the running back, and the coach said the performance is not what they had intended to do in the game.
Gary believes:
"That's the mark of a good team - you've got to run it and finish the game. We didn't do that."
He added:
"I'm looking at the big picture. We didn't run the ball well, whether we ran it right, left or up the middle. When I'm talking to them (the linemen), I'm talking to all five of them. I'm not talking about right or left."
Thanks to the team effort the Texans won the season opener, but a review of each department’s input shows that the team lack an effort for run. The coach backs the team must catch up on the left work and improve on every rushing yard in future.
Kubiak emphasised:
"We had to start (Monday) with that. We did not play well on special teams - we didn't cover well, we didn't return well."
The Texans ranked second in rushing yards in the league last season before losing a number of players to injuries and falling down on the league’s rushing yards record chart.
Now again they have a chance to prove themselves but the way the coach has disappointedly pointed out at the start, all seems not well with the running back and special teams’ situation.
At the same time, the coach has praised the effort of quarterback Matt Schaub, who missed most of the latter part of the last season with a foot injury, while the team progressed through to the playoffs after finishing top on the American Football Conference
(AFC) South division.
Matt had a good game with former starter second year QB T.J. Yates backing him up effectively. The coach has also backed the QBs and other players on the offence for further improvement in their game in future.
Although nothing serious is concerning the team performance at certain positions, the coach is least likely to let the players relax this season, knowing they are Super Bowl contenders this time around.
