Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak backs strong defence show under DC Wade Phillips – NFL News
The Houston Texans have continued to thrive on the defensive line's success under the most successful reign of defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, who is credited to help the side to their first-ever American Football Conference (AFC) South division title
in 2011.
From 2007 to 2011, the Texans had been among the top five defence sides in the National Football League (NFL) but it was arrival of Phillips that they not only further improved in the ranking but claimed the division title.
With four games played this season so far, the team stands the second most successful defence on the league’s rankings chart, while leading the division 4-0.
Even head coach Gary Kubiak now realises and appreciates that Phillips has an immense contribution in building up an invincible defence line, helping the team’s victory chances overall.
It was again a superb and strong show put up by Texans’ defence that they easily overpowered a better side of the Tennessee Titans and Gary was quick to shower praise on the defence. He said:
“We really played great defence, the whole second half. The defensive play in the second was what got us going, the big play."
It is pertinent to mention that before arrival of Phillips in Houston, Texans’ defence had been struggling and their performance in 2010 was particularly one of the lowest times of the team’s history. This at the end was one of the contributing factors to
signing of the new defensive coordinator.
An impressive part of Phillips' strategy is that he has been able to immerse the defensive line’s form into overall performance of the team so the defence’s efforts do not appear to be one-sided. This is the reason both lines are able to give a well coordinated
and equally impressive performance during each game, and this is a rare strength of the team that makes them stand out among other defensive lines and strategies in the league.
