Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak seeks better security for QB Matt Schaub – NFL News
Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak aims to tighten security around quarterback Matt Schaub after seeing the offence leader almost being mauled by the Denver Broncos defensive line in which he also lost a piece of his earlobe.
Matt appeared to be dazzled a bit after being hit hard by Broncos linebacker Joe Mays during which he lost his helmet and received a cut on the ear but managed well to play through the end of the game without letting the battering affect his fitness and
form.
Now the coach said he tends to increase protection around the quarterback which appears to be a sensible decision given Schaub is crucial to the Texans’ victory chances for the rest of the season and it will be a serious setback to the team’s hopes if they lose
the elite player at this stage of the season.
Gary said:
"We've got to protect him better. But Matt played tough all day long. When your quarterback plays like that, you're going to have a chance to win every week."
The hit has cost Mays a game and $50,000 in fine as announced by the National Football League (NFL) on past Tuesday. Although the player reportedly tends to appeal the league’s ruling, if the suspension stays he will miss the next game.
Broncos coach John Fox later defended Mays saying:
"I know this, he doesn't do that intentionally to hurt them. I mean, that's not Joe Mays. It's not what we teach. It's accidental. It's playing football, and you see it around the league every week."
It is not clear if the coach’s explanation will be of any help in the appeal against the league’s decision as the office has recently become rather strict as far as players safety is concerned.
Meanwhile, the team has confirmed Schaub is healthy and fit, and will participate in all practice sessions of the week. A possibility of serious injury was not there at the outset given the player had returned to action soon after the inspection on the sidelines
and appeared to be unaffected at all for the rest of the game.
