Houston Texans coaches Gary Kubiak, Wade Phillips bank on J.J. Watt vs Jacksonville Jaguars – NFL News
Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak has fully backed defensive end J.J. Watt’s natural style of game, saying they will not introduce any change to whatever he does.
Watt, who had made a surprise return from a dislocated elbow to perform impressively well into win of the team in the season opener against Miami Dolphins, will be crucial to Texans’ chances against the Jacksonville Jaguars this week.
In wake of the player’s ability to excel in his natural style, the coach said:
"He's been exceptional. We're not going to change anything he does."
Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is even more impressed with the DE’s performance and says he has the potential to become a star player in future.
According to Wade:
"He's going to be a bust. Not a first-round bust, but a bust in the Hall of Fame. The only players I've seen that can do what he can do, with his intensity, can be found in Canton."
It is not just Texans’ coaches who know of Watt’s potential, even oppositions’ officials reckon his capability and have spoken high of it. The visiting Jaguars’ first-year coach Mike Mularkey, who had watched Watt playing while he was a coach at Atlanta
Falcons, said of him:
"I love his motor. You can do a lot of things when you play with that relentless-type mindset. You have two things you're in complete control over - your effort and your physical play. And he's talented. So all that together makes him a tough guy to block."
Mularkey was not part of the Jaguars when Watt in their meeting during 2011 National Football League (NFL) season sacked then rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert twice and deflected a pass in Texans 20-13 win over the team. Watt had a similar deflection in
the playoffs in Cincinnati Bengals’ game, which the Texans won convincingly.
He now faces Blaine again in the home game this Sunday, and it is to be seen how he handles the quarterback who has shown clear signs of improvement this season. He is nevertheless not a quarterback he was back during his first pro career season, and it
will be a challenge for Watt to face him.
