Houston Texans cut receiver Derrick Mason after seven games – NFL News
Houston Texans have continued reshuffling of their side for third consecutive week since they suffered the setback of losing their quarterbacks Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart to foot and collarbone injuries respectively.
They announced on Tuesday to have waived off another player from their active roster. This time it is their receiver Derrick Mason.
He is the second player to go a week after the Texans confirmed to have cut their quarterback Kellen Clemens. His stay however was longer than the Clemens’ one week; he spent seven weeks with the side before being released.
The Texans had signed the veteran Mason in middle of October this year with the current season of National Football League (NFL) almost half through.
The 37-year old veteran Mason had been taken on board to replace Texans star wide receiver Andre Johnson. Johnson was out from the Texans for consecutive six games due to a hamstring injury. He is also out for another couple of
weeks for same injury and again was replaced by Mason.
Mason played seven games for the Houston Texans before being cut by them. He managed total six passes for 55 yards. His last game was against the Cincinnati Bengals on past Sunday.
The Texans who are now 10-3 in the American Football Conference (AFC) south division having won the divisional title and claimed a historic berth in playoff announced to waive him off expecting their star wide receiver Johnson
to be back next Sunday.
Texans coach Gary Kubiak said that he expected Johnson to be back to their side to play their next game this Sunday. It however is yet to see if takes part in practice session this week.
Andre Johnson since his injury for the second time this season has not played a single game or taken part in any practice session.
He was left for a game-time decision last week but later confirmed by their coach that he was unable to be available in their game against the Bengals. The Texans won that game 20-19.
In addition to release of Derrick Mason and Kellen Clemens the Texan also have signed two veteran quarterbacks Jake Delhomme and Jeff Garcia to their squad in last couple of weeks. Both players played for the side at No. 2 and
3. positions last week.
