Houston Texans defence thrives on Wade Phillips impressive strategy and work – NFL News
The Houston Texans have consistently performed well on the defensive line since arrival of defensive coordinator Wade Phillips and after having finished second on the league’s defence rating chart in the 2011 National Football League (NFL) season they are
aiming for the top slot this year.
It is second year that the team have consistently been the second best defensive side in the league, which according to some players provides them a reason to work towards the top.
Defensive end J.J. Watt for example said:
"We're working extremely hard to make that happen. We attack every day with that intensity and that mentality."
Nose tackle Shaun Cody added:
"It's important that we play well every week. We know we want to put our offense in a good position to get the ball a lot, and it's going to lead to some good things."
The entire credit of the strong defensive show goes to Phillips, as before his joining the Texans had been struggling at the bottom of the defensive charts. The official is also lucky in a sense that he led the side to the playoffs for first time in the
franchise history during his first year with the team.
He has been credited by the entire organisation for working hard on the defensive line with each player. This is his strategy that has helped the side to allow second fewer yards to opposition, just behind the Pittsburgh Steelers.
A notable point in performance of Phillips is his ability to coordinate the defence line closely into performance of offence, so both lines actually complement each other’s strength and produce the desired results out of their effort.
Coach Gary Kubiak has immense faith in Phillips’ capabilities and has often spoken high of them. For example, in the last game versus the Chicago Bears, Texans’ defence had performed remarkably well and the coach showered praise on the defensive coordinator.
It is significant to mention here that the team is well on course to the playoffs for second straight year and if they are able to perform as impressively on the defensive line as they have done so far, they can progress through to the Super Bowl.
