Houston Texans defensive coach Wade Phillips ambitious for a head coaching role – NFL News Update
Wade Phillips, the defensive coach for the Houston Texans, has for the first time openly spoken of his ambitions of exploring prospects for a head coaching role with any team around the National Football League (NFL).
Phillips in a statement said that he was not interested in any specific head coaching job but could still be considered for the position by any of the teams in search for a person to fill the vacant post.
"I don't like to toot my own horn", said Phillips.
"I've got a good record. I think I should be considered. I guess people may have taken it the wrong way that I ought to be a head coach. I don't believe that. I think I should be considered. If you look at my record, and you can look at all the people they're
talking about now, and my record is better than most everyone they're talking about, as a head coach".
The Dallas Cowboys had fired Phillips as its head coach, mid-way through the 2010 NFL regular season.
He is currently working as the defensive assistant coach for the Texans and since then, has been credited for helping the side improve its defense in the past regular season, to top the league’s rankings in its respective category.
Texans were ranked 30th in defense on the league's rating table before Phillips joined the franchise, but are now at the number two position overall.
The players believe the improvement came from Phillips and his defensive strategies.
It is the first time that the Texans have won the American Football Conference (AFC)-South title and made it to the playoffs, mainly because of their strong defense, which is being considered as one of the factors behind their impressive show-off.
Texans’ linebacker, Brian Cushing, who is one of the beneficiaries of Phillips defense rebuilding efforts, said that the turnaround helped and was unbelievable.
Cushing leads the side with a total of 114 tackles in the regular season.
A number of teams including the Jacksonville Jaguars have fired their head coaches, seeking to rebuild their sides with the next season of the NFL on mind, and are hunting potential candidates to fill the slots.
Looking at the profiles of the candidates interviewed by the Jaguars so far, he is not being seen suitable for the side, as they tend to aim for a coaching staff from the offensive department.
In any case, Wade Phillips has not been approached by any of the teams managers for a possible interview for the position as yet, but might be considered following his latest statement.
