Houston Texans’ defensive coach Wade Phillips says still to recover from gallbladder surgery – NFL News
Houston Texans’ defensive assistant coach, Wade Phillips said on Thursday, January 05, 2012, that he was not been able to recover from the impact of the surgery on his kidney and gallbladder, and is still not in a stable condition..
It is for the first time that the coach has publically spoken about his illness, which he had earlier described to be non serious.
"The bottom line is I'm fine, things are progressing well and it's going to take me about six weeks total to get full energy back and be moving around and start lifting and things like that", Phillips said.
Phillips went on a 15-day medical leave in the last month of the 2011 National Football League (NFL) regular season, to have the surgery.
He joined the team squad during practice last week apparently looking fine, however remained very limited in the engagement with the players in their workout.
Following further improvement in his health, he intensified his workout in the coming weeks, despite admitting that he was still not able to regain his full strength.
"But it's been getting better", Phillips added. "I've been here this week for all the game planning, which I haven't been previously. All the game plan stuff, all the real necessary stuff, I've been involved in".
There was no further confirmation about the status of his illness or surgery, or even a timeline of his recovery to the fully fit condition, except that he offered his gratitude to the team management for their support during his illness and recovery process.
He said it was the team internist, James Muntz, who advised him to undergo surgery straight after he had been informed about the illness.
"Why he did that or whatever, I'm still blessed for that because they found something that needed to get done, and we did it very quickly", Phillips said. "Everything came out well”.
Wade Phillips took over the defensive coaching duties at the Texans in the past season of the NFL, following his sacking by the Cowboys as a head coach.
Since then, he has been able to turn around the Texans defence from the 30th position earlier to be the second best in the NFL’s overall defence rankings.
Both the team players and team management have credited their defence department for playing a vital role in their wins in the regular season and helping them claim their first ever American Football Conference (AFC)-South title.
It is for the first time in their franchise history that the Texans have won a division and made it to playoff with Wade Phillips being amongst their leading candidates to have made all this possible for the side.
