Houston Texans get win over the Kansas City Chiefs after fourth quarter comeback
The Houston Texans' big guns, running back Arian Foster, quarterback Matt Schaub, and wide receiver Andre Johnson led the way by sparking an improbable fourth quarter comeback to earn a 35-31 win over
the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday 17 October.
How it happened
Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel was impressive throwing three touchdown passes, including two to receiver Dwayne Bowe, as the Chiefs led after three quarters by a score of 24-14.
The rushing tandem of Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles were also in good form rushing for 100 yards and 93 yards respectively, as the Chiefs appeared to be in control.
The Texans got back into it in the fourth, and trailed only 24-21 after Arian Foster got his first of two touchdowns on the day. But Thomas Jones restored Kansas City's 10-point advantage after scampering
in from 11 yards out after a nine play, 70 yard drive with just five minutes to go.
But the Texans responded with two 80-plus yard drives for touchdowns at the end of the game to get the win. It was an 11-yard pass from Schaub to Johnson which proved to be the decisive strike.
What they're saying
The Texans had another rough day on defence as they gave up 228 yards along the ground, leading head coach Gary Kubiak to say: "We've got to tackle better, we've got to cover better, we've got to do everything
better. We're really struggling. The key right now is we've got to play really big offensively as a team."
And the Texans offence certainly did respond as Kubiak was quick to laud praises on his starting quarterback.
"Our quarterback was absolutely spectacular," Kubiak said of Schaub. "You can't win games like that in this league unless your quarterback is special, and ours was special today."
Despite the disappointing loss, Chiefs second-year head coach Todd Haley was able to look at the setback as just another growing pain as the Chiefs continue to rebuild even after their promising start
to the season.
"We're not there yet. We're in a process," Haley said. "It takes time, but we continue to make positive strides."
What it all means
For the Chiefs it was their second loss in a row after winning their first three games of the season. They will host the 3-2 Jacksonville Jaguars next week.
For the Texans, their defence, besides struggling all day, received some horrible news when they learned that one of their top linebackers, DeMeco Ryans, will be out for the season with a torn Achilles'
tendon. They now enter their bye week with a record of 4-2 and will compete for top spot in the AFC South when they take on the Indianapolis Colts on November 1.
