Houston Texans hire QBs coach Karl Dorrell aiming to bolster their attack– NFL News
The Houston Texans have added another staff to their coaching department with an apparent focus of training and development of their attack line with next season on mind.
As of the latest announcement of the team management, they have hired Karl Dorrell, to work as a quarterbacks coach under the reign of their head coach, Gary Kubiak.
Dorrell has served the Miami Dolphins in the role of QBs' coach for last four seasons and before that he spent another two as a wide receivers' coach.
He is the former head coach of University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) football team where he finished with a favourable record of 35-27.
This is the only major signing that the Houston Texans have come up with since ending their most successful run in the 2011 National Football League (NFL) season.
Texans have reached the playoff round of the league for the first time in their franchise history, after finishing atop the American Football Conference (AFC) South division.
They won the divisional title and claimed the playoff berth, both for the first time.
This remarkable achievement has come for the team despite successive problem of players’ injuries. They played almost the second half of the season with their regular quarterbacks, Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart.
All their divisional rivals, the Indianapolis Cots, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans lost to Texans to top their division. They were closer to beating the Baltimore Ravens to reach the AFC championship game as well.
Dorrell’s hiring as an assistant coach comes in line with the team’s problems at the quarterback position. After being thin at the position, Texans have relied on their rookie starter, T.J.Yates.
Yates, in spite of a couple of lapses, has come well upto the team’s expectations during the games he played as the number one quarterback, and this is probably the reason why the team management now wants to focus on his training and grooming with the next
season on mind.
The QB is expected to be given a prominent role in the team’s offensive line, even if their main attack players, Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart, are able to recover from their respective injuries and join the squad.
Texans is probably only team that has maintained a balance between their offence and defence departments.
Their defensive coach, Wade Phillips, has been credited to build Texans as the second best defence of the league.
Now the team is aiming to focus more on its offence department and build up its strength in the long run.
They are hoping Dorrell to be another Wade Phillips, who is as much effective in solving their defence problems as Phillips was in sorting out their offence issues.
