Houston Texans maintain their unbeaten run as they beat New York Jets 23-17 in Week 5 – NFL Recap
Houston Texans managed to grind away another win to retain their place on top of the league standings after beating New York Jets by 23-17 in their Week 5 game of Monday Night Football on October 08, 2012, at MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey.
It was first-ever win for Texans against Jets. The Jets gave a much better fight this time, but missed many opportunities to get in front. Texans on the other hand did not have full proof game as was expected; in fact, it was a hard-fought win.
Running back Arian Foster gave the most prominent performance among Texans offence as he finished with 29 carries for 152 yards along with a touchdown.
Jets offence scored their first points in two weeks after failing to score a single point in their 34-0 bashing by San Francisco 49ers in Week 4. Yet, they missed a lot of chances to get back into the game.
The defence did look better and showed the improvements that Jets head coach Rex Ryan had talked about this week. During the postgame conference, Ryan said:
"That's a good football team that we played. The thing that's upsetting is the fact that we helped them. Clearly, that's a good team that doesn't need any help. We're kicking ourselves."
Meanwhile, Texans defence looked slightly weak as compared to their last week’s performance.
The defence got thin at linebacker when Brian Cushing got injury on his knee during the second quarter and was unable to return to the field.
Texans quarterback Matt Schaub continued his impressive nine-game winning streak that started back in the 2011 season. He completed 14 out of 28 passes for 209 yards.
Jets starting quarterback Mark Sanchez again showed below-average play as he finished with 14 of 31 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown. He was intercepted twice during the game.
Texans scored early in the game as they got a 34-yard touchdown from tight end Owen Daniels.
Jets replied eight minutes later as Sanchez threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jeff Cumberland. At end of first quarter, score was tied at 7-7.
At the start of second quarter, Foster ran 13 yards to reach the end zone to take Texans to 14-7. Texans strengthened their lead during final seconds of the first half, thanks to a 27-yard field goal by Shayne Graham. First half ended with 17-7.
Ten minutes into second half, Texans scored another field goal to take the score 20-7. Then Jets came back as running back Joe McKnight rushed for a remarkable 100 yards on a kickoff return to reach the end zone.
Graham then scored another field goal for Texans as third quarter finished 23-14. Nick Folk got a 21-yard field goal early in the final quarter, but it was not enough for Jets, as Texans won the game 23-17.
