Houston Texans owner Bob McNair backs planned city bid for hosting Super Bowl -NFL News
Houston Texans’ owner, Bob McNair, has backed the local authorities’ planned move to bid for hosting the Super Bowl event in Houston, but insisted they should also do something to promote the city as a tourist spot, which is necessary to win hosting rights.
McNair noted with concern that Houston is not considered a tourist destination.
He said:
"When people start thinking about, 'Where am I going to go on vacation this year?' they don't typically think about Houston. We need to change that image. That's part of it."
Still he emphasised on the need for coordinated efforts by the local civic leaders to win hosting rights for the game, most probably in 2017.
He was elaborating on the reports that the local county and Reliant Park stadium will bid for the hosting of the event in 2017.
McNair said of the efforts:
"That's fine. It's really a city effort, and it's a big effort, so I'm glad there are some people interested in jumping in there and getting something started."
The reports of the collective efforts by the two aforementioned organisations were confirmed by remarks by the Harris County Sports Convention Corp chairman, Edgar Colon.
Colon was commenting on a presentation by consultants that recommended a number of projects at Reliant Park to add to the chances of brining the Super Bowl to Houston.
Texans’ owner said that the team can help those efforts by winning consistently on the field. Also, he said they will be seeking to bring in more funds to repair and renovate the stadium
According to the owner:
"Our first concern is Reliant Stadium, and we want to make sure we have adequate funds for repairs and replacement and improvements."
Houston hosted the Super Bowl in 2004, a couple of years after Texans became a part of the National Football League (NFL).
The team was through to the playoffs and won the American Football Conference (AFC) South division title for the first time in its franchise history in 2011.
Now they are coming back into the 2012 season as one of the Super Bowl contenders, and the team is hopeful of doing even better this year.
