Houston Texans re-sign centre Chris Myers to four-year, $25 million contract-NFL News
A day after the Houston Texans lost the outside linebacker, Mario Williams, to the Buffalo Bills, the management confirmed to have successfully negotiated a four-year deal with the free agent centre, Chris Myers.
In spite of his desire of returning to Texans next season, Myers was reported to have been exploring an opportunity of moving elsewhere with an interest for better benefits.
As that could not work out for him until Friday, March 16, 2012, the player tweeted to disclose signing of a fresh deal with Texans.
Officially, no information is available on the tenure, value and other terms of the deal but a couple of media reports claimed that the player has been landed a four-year, $25 million contract. It includes $14 million guaranteed money.
Texans apparently have been satisfied on bringing back the player off the free agency, which had started on March 13, 2012.
Since it was not in their financial strength to match the bid that their former defensive end, Williams, had won from the Buffalo Bills, the management was said to be keen on retaining the centre.
Myers’ re-signing has come amid release of a number of players, which is concerned with over expenditure on the players’ salaries.
While commenting on the deal, Myers said he was happy to return to Texans and offered his gratitude to fans for their support and backing.
He tweeted:
"Let me first say thank you to all of the dedicated Texans fans out there. I am extremely happy to stay here in Houston and be a Texan! Can't wait to get back down to work and build on last season's success!"
The player has recently grown into his role and managed to improve his game level significantly. He made it to the Pro Bowl game last season for the first time after Texans set the franchise record of 2,448 yards.
He has been playing as starter for the team since 2008. He was drafted in by the Denver Broncos in 2005. The key to his success is his consistency and form.
Myers had a significant role in their record run of 2011-12 National Football League (NFL) regular season. They were able to win the American Football Conference (AFC) South division title and made it to playoffs for the first time in their franchise history.
The players who have recently been cut by the team are right tackle, Eric Winston and quarterback, Matt Leinart.
The right guard, Mike Brisiel, and Mario Williams are two other players who have signed respective deals with the Oakland Raiders and Buffalo Bills.
Houston Texans’ owner, Bob McNair, was reported to be interested in retaining Williams but the delay in their decision-making cost them the player. At the end, they were unable to match the offer from Bills, who took the player on the hefty $100 million
payout.
