Houston Texans say Wade Phillips interview with Bucs not to affect playoff preparation – NFL News
Houston Texans have allowed their defensive assistant coach, Wade Phillips, to be interviewed by Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a potential candidate to their head coaching position.
Buccaneers fired their fulltime coach, Raheem Morris, following their poor performance in the regular season, 2011, of the National Football League (NFL), the premier American football league.
They finished the season with loss 12 out of the 16 games they had played throughout the season.
The team management is now on search for a new head coach and has approached the Houston Texans for permission to interview their defensive co-ordination staff, Wade Phillips.
As of the latest, the Texans are reported to have granted the permission to Phillips to be interviewed by the Bucs, despite that they are preparing for one of the most crucial games in the second round of the playoff season this year.
It is for the first time in their franchise history that the Texans have reached the playoff round of the league.
They went on to stage a win in their first game, which the side played against the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday, January 07, 2012.
Now, they are preparing for their next game, which is against the American Football Conference (AFC) north champs, the Baltimore Ravens.
It is expected that the Texans will really need to perform beyond their potential to beat the Ravens, who have ended the season among the top five teams, with final score of 12-4 on the league’s points table.
In this perspective it was being projected that the Texans were unlikely to grant the permission to their official to be interviewed at this point of time, as it could affect their preparation for their upcoming game.
The move was being seen distracting the players’ focus from training, given the reason that Phillips matter the most in building up their defence.
The official is being credited to build the second best defence in the league, which stood at the 30th position before his joining.
However, Texans head coach, Gary Kubiak, said that it will not affect their preparation and added that they have allowed the assistant coach to be interviewed by the Bucs.
"There's obviously a window where they have to ask for permission to talk to your guys, and then you try to make it work within your normal schedule," Kubiak said. "There's nothing that will change about our schedule. We'll go through our normal week, and
Wade will visit with them some time Friday evening, and so he'll still be working on Friday evening when everybody else is getting a little break. Nothing will change about what we do. I want everybody to understand that."
Wade Phillips has returned to the Texans, recently, after recovery from a surgery on his kidney and gallbladder, which he underwent last month, December 2011.
