Houston Texans to bet on QB Matt Schaub in Super Bowl hopes-NFL News
The Houston Texans have said that they were not looking anywhere else than quarterback, Matt Schaub, who, they believe, is capable of helping them through to Super Bowl any season.
Bob McNair, the owner of the team, said that he understood the validity of talks around the signing of the free agent quarterback, Peyton Manning, by a number of teams from the National Football League (NFL), but added that Texans were content with Schaub.
Schaub missed most of the 2011-12 NFL regular season due to a foot injury and is expected to rejoin the squad this year, either in the training camp or at the start of the regular season in September 2012.
In his absence, Texans reached the playoffs with rookie QB, T.J. Yates, on the starting position.
Before that, Schaub was replaced by another fulltime QB, Matt Leinart, but he was injured in his first appearance and was later ruled out for rest of the season with a collarbone.
The management then brought the veterans, Jake Delhomme and Jeff Garcia, as backup of the rookie and until their final game against the Baltimore Ravens, which they lost, the arrangement remained the same on the offensive line.
In spite of injuries to their two main quarterbacks, Texans managed to win the American Football Conference (AFC) South division title.
Now, they are coming back into the next NFL season as one of the Super Bowl contenders, who are shortlisted based on their previous year’s performance.
It will certainly be a tough challenge for the team, whose form during the last season was helped by the poor show-off of the teams such as Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars to some extent.
This year, they might not have that advantage again, as both Colts and Jaguars have gone through massive reshuffling and are expected to come out as stronger units.
Amid the situation, Texans are hopeful of working hard on the field. The management believes they have the right attack line, which, led by Schaub, is capable of taking the team to the next Super Bowl.
Schaub is backed by the owner at a juncture when almost all teams of their stature are after Peyton Manning.
Also, Texans must be expecting even better performance by Yates after his rookie year.
He has already proved his worth and is one of the few lucky players who have seen their teams through to the playoffs during first year of their career.
McNair, in the meantime, while wishing early recovery to Manning, expressed his faith in Matt Schaub.
At the same time, he admitted that Manning’s calibre and stature in the league no doubt merits the debate and hot pursuit around his signing.
