Houston Texans waive quarterback Kellen Clemens two weeks after signing him – NFL News
The Houston Texans announced to have cut their quarterback Kellen Clemens only a couple weeks after they had signed the player as a replacement to Matt Leinart.
This unexpected move from Texans' management came after their loss to visiting Atlanta Falcons 17-10 on past Sunday. In the match the Texans had given the starting role to their rookie starter Taylor Jonathan (T.J.) Yates while
their new signee Jake Delhomme was placed as back-up of Yates.
Delhomme was signed by the Texans a week after they did Kellen Clemens. Clemens had joined them on November 23 (2011) and Delhomme returned from his retirement to replace Matt Leinart a week after, when tests results confirmed
that Matt Leinart injury was serious and he was unlikely for rest of current season.
However placement of T.J.Yates and Jake Delhomme as first and second-string quarterbacks explained it all to Clemens cut from Texans side after his short stay of two weeks. He had been placed as a candidate to be the Yates’ back-up.
Delhomme signing however changed the game for him completely, and placing of Delhomme at the number two position cleared things further for him.
The reason that T.J.Yates was placed at the quarterback position to replace Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart, both out of rest of current season due to injuries, that he had confidence of both their coach and Matt Schaub.
However the reason that the veteran Delhomme was not given the starting position seems that the Texans want to groom and see potential of the rookie Yates in the longer run. It will be seen from his performance in rest of the matches,
though.
The Houston Texans are yet to settle down at the quarterback position since the foot injury to their star quarterback Matt Schaub, which ruled him out of this season. They have come out with a change of player almost every week
on average after Schaub’s absence.
They first lost another start starter Matt Leinart, who too is out for rest of season due to collarbone injury. Next week they signed Clemens, and Delhomme in the following week. This week they announced waiver of Clemens leaving
them with two quarterbacks, T.J. Yates and Jake Delhomme.
