Houston loses Case Keenum for the season
The Houston Cougars have lost their starting quarterback Case Keenum for the rest of the season. The senior injured his knee trying to make a tackle after an interception against the UCLA Bruins on Saturday.
Keenum is Houston’s top offensive player and was making a bid for the Heisman Trophy this season. The youngster is fifth in total passing yards and second in touchdown passes all-time in the NCAA. Last season with the University Keenum managed to tally an
impressive 5,671 passing yards to go along with 44 touchdown throws. If he was able to throw for similar numbers this season he would have eclipsed the all-time leaders in both categories.
Making matters worse for Houston is the loss of back-up quarterback Cotton Turner for the remainder of the season. Turner was also injured during Saturday’s game against the Bruins, suffering a broken collar bone.
Cougars coach Kevin Smith released a statement, saying. “I am very disappointed for both these young men. It’s hard to see them hurting right now. They both are a big part of this team and wanted to be contributors to its success this season. I think they
can still do that with their off-the-field leadership.”
The loss of the two quarterbacks means a huge hit to what many were thinking would be an impressive season for Houston. The Cougars were favourites to win Conference USA this season and up until their loss to UCLA last week were ranked 23rd in
the nation. Houston showed great promise in their first two matches, destroying both Texas State and UTEP. The defeat at the hands of the Bruins, coupled with the loss of both their quarterbacks may have spelled an end to a potentially successful 2010 campaign.
The Cougars are likely to go with freshman Terrance Broadway in next week’s game against Tulane.
