Question:

How, and where can I rescue a dog from a puppy mill?

I do not mean buying one from a pet store, because that only supports the puppy mill industry, but I mean maybe one of the dogs they are breeding, or anything I just want to help these helpless creatures. I know they are not healthy, and such, but even if they have to be put to sleep, it will get them out of there!

  1. The best way to help these victims of abuse for profit is to keep getting the word out about the horrid conditions they suffer and likelyhood of buying a sick, inbred dog. The more people know, the less people buy these animals. When these low-lifes can't sell enough pups to pay the bills they will go out of business.

  2. Contact the breed rescue in your area, many are listed on the AKC site.  Some states get many more puppy mill dogs than others because the mills are located in their states, PA and Minnesota have lots of puppy mills.

  3. Pick virtually any breed, and adopt one from breed rescue.

Since reputable breeders tend to rescue their own dogs, it is more than likely that a dog you get from a breed-specific rescue has come from a puppy mill or backyard breeder that isn;t responsible for what they produce.  They also are prescreened so you would get a decent pet that is suitable to live with.

Some breeds are more likely to have come from a puppy mill - anything you can hold under your arm is a surefire candidate.
