  1. you rub it with a strong metal and if it's fake it will rip off

  2. Bite it.

If it leaves a mark, it's real.

  3. real gold is marked , like 14k or 18 k , somewhere on the clasp  ....and it doesn't change color :)

  4. Rub some foundation on the back of your hand.  Then rub the gold on the foundation.  If it's real, it'll leave a black mark.

  5. The same with any precious gems/ stones, they will be given a Certificate of Authenticity.

Another good indication would be to check the color, cut, price. Pure gold are usually heavier in weight and do not rust under moist/ humid temperatures.

Fake gold on the other hand may rust over time as they're normally plated in gold which obviously is not the same thing. If still in doubt, get your gold evaluated by a reputable jeweller. They should be able to tell apart an actual gold piece from that of a fake one.

  6. Real vs. Fake gold, an interesting question. To start, what are you checking?

If it is a jewelry piece it will have some sort of mark as to its karat value (purity) and if it is plated or solid. If it is marked with a number followed by a "k" with no letters after, it is assumed to be a solid gold alloy, unless the number is 24 which is pure gold. Most jewelry is not solid 24 k as the metal is too soft and will easily damage.

Always buy your gold from a reputable jeweler to assure you are getting exactly what you are paying for. Most will inspect a gold item and tell you what the markings mean.

The same is true when buying coins, reputable dealers will back your purchase. There are some frauds selling reissued and just plain fake coins. Professional coin gradings are done by only a few companies so a graded coin is usually your best bet.

Gold bullion has markings from the maker and are not easily faked. Common bullion denominations can easily be checked for size and weight.

Gold nuggets are almost never pure 24 k. Usually the purest run about 22 k. A simple scratch test will reveal a fake or plated nugget.

There are various test kits on the market including a non-destructive gold testing pen which will verify surface gold purity. There are also acid type tests which will quickly reveal "fake gold".
