How's the weather like in May in Melbourne?

Thinking of taking my family there May end next year? how's the weather going to be like? i do not like really hot weather but cool weather, not those freezing type... thanks.

you can start the day in a parka and end up in a singlet. its not predictable at all.

You sound like me. I went to Melbourne in June once and loved the weather, tshirt by day when in the sun, thin jumper if in the shade or windy, and warm jumper by night. May will be a little warmer, but if you come at the end of May it should be nice for you.

As others have said, the weather really does have 4 seasons in one day. I suggest just packing jeans, tshirts, light jackets for the day and a warmer jumper/jacket for night. You don't need any snow gear or jackets to that extent.

It is cold in Melbourne - It's said that you get 3 seasons of weather in a day here. It will go from sunny, to windy, to rainy at the click of your fingers, but it is a great city. I lived in Melbourne for 6 years, and I learnt you always pack a rain coat and an umbrella no matter what the forecast or season is.

For May, I would definitely pack warm clothing and some wet weather gear - it can get very cold in winter. Also, a couple of t-shirts just in case you get lucky.

May is an appreciably cooler month. It's the last month of Autumn, heading into winter. Mean maximum temperature is 16-17 degrees celcius. It's best to bring clothing that you can layer, as often Melbourne can chuck in some warmer days just to mix things up. It could be warm in the morning, freezing in the afternoon and raining at night. (Melbourne though, has half the rainfall than Brisbane or Sydney does.) Depending on how long you're planning on visiting, you might experience all four seasons in one day.
