  1. Most diamonds are mined. The distribution of these diamonds varies but most are verified by some sort of diamond inspector who authenticates the value of the stone. After that they are sent to the store to be sold. (Or they are fought over and many people die, true story).

  2. Diamonds are mined from a hardrock intrusion called kimberlite or they can be found as placer deposits where they have eroded out of the original kimberlite pipe and been deposited in sediments. If you see pictures of Africans digging in river mud for diamonds, they're looking for placer deposits (Sierra Leone, etc.). Diamonds in South Africa and, recently, in Canada are mined directly from the kimberlite pipe.

They are distributed through the typical process whereby the miner sells to a buyer who sells to a processor, who sells to a jeweler/artisan, who sells to a shop, who sells to the wearer.

Depending on the economics of the extracting country, the distribution can be deadly, hence the term 'blood diamond' and the increasing popularity of stones found in Canada.
